Bolshoi Gondur is a small village surrounded by shadowy woods and endless fields among the Russian taiga. The residents live in close connection with a mystical shamanism and nature. They belong to the tribe of Udmurt people, live in matriarchal structures and have one of the highest suicide rates worldwide. The movie accompanies five villagers in the course of one year and tries to understand what impact the intense relation to death has on life.
